Migraine Symptoms

Migraine headaches are severely painful, one sided, recurrent headaches that are sometimes associated with symptoms like visual and auditory disturbances. If you are one of those who suffer from it, you should learn about its symptoms, what triggers/causes it and its treatment.

Migraine symptoms

Throbbing/pulsating pain that is usually just one side of the head that is near the temples. Some symptoms like nausea, vomiting, dizziness, loss of appetite, feeling numb in some parts of your body, blurred vision and irritability might accompany the headache. Some symptoms may still persist even after the headache has ended like stiff neck and sleepiness.

Causes

There have been genetic links as to causing it. Most of those who suffer migraine also have a family member who is affected. One cause involves changes in the blood flow in brain. Blood vessels narrows thus resulting in reduced blood flow. This causes the symptoms to arise like dizziness, visual disturbances and numbness. After which, the blood vessels then dilates which results to a very severe headache. It can also be triggered by certain foods like chocolates, nuts, peanut butters, cheese, mostly foods with MSG (monosodium glutamate), alcohol, skipping meals, hormonal changes in women, stress, lack of sleep, caffeine and smoking.

An approach to treatment

An aim to its treatment is by preventing it. You can prevent it by changing your lifestyle and medications. With regards to your lifestyle, keep it health; avoid things that trigger the headache. Also, keeping a journal would help you in becoming familiar with the symptoms and your body. Record the specific time and date you had a severe headache and try to recall the activities you had before it occurred. That way, you could be aware what triggered it and you could avoid it the next time. Never skip meals, exercise, relax and do not smoke. Once symptoms start to arise, you can lie in a quiet room and relax. Before you take just any medication to stop headache, try consulting your doctor first. Showing your journal would also help in giving you the right medication.
